Xian Incident – How would today’s China be without Xian Incident 70 years ago?

Xian Incident – How would today’s China be without Xian Incident 70 years ago?
Recent Chinese history will have to be re-written without Xian Incident which took place on December 12, 1936. I am a Hong Kong Chinese. In memory of the 70th anniversary of this most critical event in contemporary Chinese history, I have summarized Xian Incident in this article.

Are you planning to visit China? If yes, please do include Xian on your itinerary. When you are in Xian, make sure to visit Huaqing Chi (Huaqing Hot Spring). This is the place where two young troop leaders captured their Commander-In-Chief and forced him to compromise.

Xian Incident by nature is a military exhortation. It is the first and only event of the same nature in Chinese history.

It made the name of Xian appeared on international news headlines and drew the entire world’s attention in December 1936.

Key Characters

Zhang Xue Liang and Yang Hu Cheng initiated the military exhortation during the 10-year civil war.

When you visit Huaqing Chi in Xian, your final destination must be Suite Wujian (五間廰 also known as Five Room Hall). It was the place where Xian Incident took place. Now it is like a mini museum. You can see the holes left on the walls by bullet shots during the gun battle. You can also see the window through which Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek escaped up to the Li Mountain.

There you can also see the first-hand information in texts and photos, newspaper clippings etc.

Take a walk at Suite Wujiang, you’ll feel like witnessing the Xian Incident. If you would like to take a 45-minute walk, you will reach Li Mountain. A Military Exhortation Pavilion was built at where Chiang was captured.

When and How Did It Happen?

It started on the chilly morning at 4am, December 12, 1936 in Suite Wujian of Huaqing Chi. Chiang Kai Shek was woken by fire shots. He sensed himself in danger and escaped out of the window on bare feet. Zhang’s troop felt the warmth in Chiang’s bed and was sure he was somewhere nearby.

They did a thorough search on Li Mountain. Generalissimo Chiang was captured alive around 7.30am. He was found in his pajamas, cold and shoeless in a small cave. During the process, he shouted at the soldier “I am your Commander-in-Chief”. The soldier saluted and replied “but you are also our hostage”.

A press conference was held at 11.30am. Zhang and Yang announced the capturing of their Commander-in-Chief. At the same time, they told the public why they did it.

Background

In the early thirties, China was in civil war between Kuomintang (KMT, lead by Chiang Kai Shek) and Chinese Communist Party (CCP, lead by Mao Zedong). At the same time, they were facing Japanese invasion.

Chiang Kai Shek’s national policy was “solving external problem must come after solving internal problem”. That said before defending China against Japanese, he must defeat the CCP first.

The two young Northeast Troop leaders Zhang and Yang had to executive Chiang’s policy by order. Somehow Chiang sensed something off track. He flew to Xian in December 4, 1936 and stayed at Suite Wujian of Huaqing Chi. He was aiming to force Zhang and Yang to execute his orders.

Xian Incident happened one week after Zhang kept crying and begging Chiang to change his policy.

Effect

Zhang and Yang announced their proposal to reform the Nanjing ROC Government. At the same time, they called upon the CCP to send their representatives to Xian. Negotiation went on between CCP and KMT to determine the fate of Chiang and China. Of course Chiang’s wife Soong May Ling played an important role.

After all, Chiang committed stop suppressing the CCP. He agreed to form a united front against Japanese. He was then released on December 25, 1936.

For the first time, two Chinese names appeared on the list of Time’s Man of the Year: Chiang Kai Shek and Soong May Ling (1937).

Learn from History

Chinese believe reviewing history would bring up new ideas. How would you view Xian Incident? Here are some more facts for your information. Zhang was kept in custody for the rest of his life. Yang was killed just before KMT retreated to Taiwan.

Zhang never told more details about the incident until his death in 2001. Some facts about Xian Incident still remain mysterious with all of its parties passing away. Thus, there are controversies over the cause, process and effect of the incident.

Five Reasons You Must Visit Hong Kong

Five Reasons You Must Visit Hong Kong
1. Easy Access and World’s Best Airport

You must visit Hong Kong if you plan to travel China. Hong Kong is a major transportation hub in Asia and is a gateway to China. It is extremely easy to find your way here. There are daily direct flights connecting Hong Kong to major cities in Europe and N. America. Boeing long-range aircrafts 747, 767, 763 are widely used.

Here are some flight durations (non-stop) for your reference. From New York is 16Hr20m, London is 11Hr45m, Sydney is 9Hr20m and Tokyo is 4Hr45m.

Once you land in Hong Kong, you must be convinced by its customer services and efficiency in immigration and customs checks. Hong Kong Airport is voted the World’s Best Airport from 2001-2005 (Skytrax online survey).

2. Great Choices of Accommodation

You must visit Hong Kong because you are able to find an accommodation that suits your need, whether luxury, budget or something in between. For luxury holiday makers, Hong Kong has almost all the world famous 5-star hotels – Grand Hyatt, Mandarin Oriental, Peninsula, Four Seasons, many more to name.

If you travel on a budget, Hong Kong Youth Hostel Association operates many hostels at very attractive rates. A friend of mine told me she was able to book a bed for HK$80 per night. However she had to share a room with some others. If you have four in your group, you can book a 4-bed room at HK$400 (US$50) per night. Quite a good deal!

3. Gourmets’ Paradise

You must visit Hong Kong if you love Chinese food. Hong Kong culinary market is dominated by Cantonese food, one of the yummiest among all Chinese food. Cantonese food is world famous for its simple cooking method and fresh ingredients used. A seafood dinner is a must. Try a steam live fish. It is a life-time experience. Nowhere else in the world people will cook fish in the same manner however so delicious. A dim sum lunch/breakfast is also a must. This has become the life style of Hong Kongers, Chinese and foreigners alike.

Hong Kong is not only famous for Cantonese food. You can find any other Chinese food here and any other kind of food from all over the world.

Hong Kong is a place you can eat whenever you want to. There are shops opening round the clock. You would never be hungry here.

4. Shoppers’ Paradise

You must visit Hong Kong if you want to buy luxury goods at the lowest price. Genuine luxury brands like LV, Prada, Corum, Burberrys and many other world famous designers’ labeled products are sold at unbeatable prices. In many cases, these shops are crowded and even with a waiting line.

Hong Kong is also a place where you can buy the trendiest everything with the lowest price in the world – mobile phone, computer, digital camera, electronics, fashion and accessories etc. You must be convinced by the wide range of choices and their low prices.

5. Most Beautiful Night View and Skyline

You must visit Hong Kong if you are not impressed by any other night views you’ve seen.

The Intercontinental Lobby Lounge is included in the book 1,000 Places To See Before You Die. Would it be over rated? No, it is not, because it is one of the best places to view the beautiful Hong Kong skyline at night.

Hong Kong at night is stunning for many reasons. Beautiful buildings are highly condensed with layers of colours spreading from the harbour up to the peak. You can take a panoramic view from distance. Or you can ride on Star Ferry to have a close look.

Hong Kong skyline contributes to the beauty of Hong Kong day and night. Numerous beautifully designed buildings line up on the Island side of the world famous Victoria Harbour. They are lit up with well designed colour schemes that make the night view of Hong Kong extremely stunning. Hong Kong at night is an incredible experience of your China travel.

San Francisco Schools Connect to China and its Chinese Community

San Francisco Schools Connect to China and its Chinese Community
The Alice Fong Yu Alternative School

The Alice Fong Yu Alternative School, one San Francisco School, is the first Chinese immersion school in the United States. The school is designed as a two-way Chinese/English instructional environment. The school provides an outstanding educational experience for children of all backgrounds. All students at Alice Fong Yu develop competency in the Cantonese and English languages and use the two languages actively in the content curriculum. The school aims to have all students to be able to converse in and become literate in both English and Cantonese by 5th grade. The Mandarin language is added after the fifth grade. The Mandarin/English program is similar in scope and function to the Cantonese/English program. The program is intended to vigorously include the staff, parents, and students in cultural and language education. The Alice Fong Yu school uses parents and volunteers in a variety of enrichment programs such as, Performing Arts Workshop, Poets in the Schools, and science and library consultants.

The Alice Fong Yu Alternative School’s Chinese Exchange Program

Created in 2000, the exchange program sends the eighth grade class to Beijing to meet their Chinese pen pals. The program gives students the opportunity to use their knowledge of the Chinese language and culture in a real life experience. The students travel to Beijing and Hong Kong where they meet Chinese students their own age. This experience allows students to experience the culture first-hand and put their language skills to the ultimate test.

In January of 2005, the program came closer to being a true exchange program. San Francisco Schools through the Alice Fong Yu School hosted students and teachers from The Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University. The selected students and two teachers from China stayed with host families and participated in classes and school functions including English, art and modern dance classes. The Chinese students were able to tour City College, the Chinese Consulate and many interesting tourist destinations in the San Francisco area. Both the local and Chinese students spent their time practicing English and Mandarin.

Dance and Art Students from San Francisco Schools Travel to China

Other programs in San Francisco Schools have allowed students to travel to China to participate in international exchanges and competitions. This summer five students from the San Francisco School of Arts will travel to ShenZhen, China as representatives of the United States at the ShenZhen International Culture and Arts Festival. As part of an Educational Exchange program facilitated by Dr. Marie Lee, Director of East/West Child Research and Development Center and former school administrator of the San Francisco Schools, all student expenses in China will be provided in full by the ShenZhen Nanshan Government. The five selected students will perform two dances, Chant of the Sirens and Basin Street Blues. The School of the Arts students were the only students from the United States invited to the Festival in 2006. The three hundred students at the Festival represented countries from around the world including: Australia/ New Zealand, Russia, Germany, Bulgaria, Canada, India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and others. Along with performing at the Festival students will visit schools, attend art exhibitions, eat new foods, visit tourist locations, and learn about Chinese culture and language while staying with Chinese families and students.

The Top Four Tourist Cities in China

The Top Four Tourist Cities in China
Do you know that Beijing, Xian, Guilin and Hong Kong are the most visited cities in China?

A lot of people refer it as the 'golden route' or 'presidential route' after Bill Clinton visited these cities in 1998.

Certainly the golden route has a good combination of everything: great historical heritages, beautiful landscape, delicious Chinese food, great shopping and so on.

Best time to visit China is spring and autumn when China has beautiful weather and fewer tourists.

If you are a first-time visitor to China, the golden route is your top pick. You would need at least two weeks to complete the tours.

Beijing – you would need at least four nights to complete what you need to see and do.

Great Wall of China - the longest man-made architecture on earth. This should be your number one destination in Beijing.

Forbidden City - the former palaces and offices of Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is currently a museum with countless treasures.

Summer Palace - the most well preserved royal resort of Qing Dynasty.

Temple of Heaven is the symbol of Beijing. Ming and Qing emperors worshipped Heaven here.

Please do include a hutong tour in order to have an old Beijing feel. After all, don't forget a Beijing duck feast.

Tip: Beijing travel requires a lot of walking. Please be prepared for it.

Xian – everyone should visit Xian at least once in life, Chinese and foreigners alike. Spend three nights here is necessary to cover the most important sightseeing.

Xian has been a capital city for 13 dynasties, totaling 1,100 years. It was the world’s most prosperous city in Tang Dynasty, 1300 years ago.

The Terra Cotta Warriors is a full-scale replication of the Qin Dynasty army. There is no other place in the world you can see a life-size army of over 2,000 years old.

Banpo Neolithic village is a famous site of 6,000 years old which has typical features of a matriarchal society. You’ll also see clues of ancient burial, marriages, creative tools and artifacts.

In Xian, don’t forget to go for a dumpling feast which usually goes with a first class entertainment show of Tang Dynasty music and dance.

Guilin is ranked second on China’s list of top 10 tourists’ destinations. It has beautiful landscape integrated with fabulous countryside. Make sure you won’t miss the Reed Flute Cave, the Crown Cave and some of the beautiful peaks.

Don’t forget to make a day trip to Yangshuo where the best hills and waters are. Go there on a Li River cruise and return by bus. If you choose to stay overnight, you would be able to watch the spectacular ‘Liu Sanjie’ performance, which takes place on the Li River. Yangshuo is truly a place for you to relax and enjoy.

In Guilin, make sure to go for a rice noodle feast. Or you can just eat it as a street food at ¥2 per bowl. They are extremely yummy.

A Guilin tour including Yangshuo would require a minimum stay of three nights.

Hong Kong is very different from any other mainland Chinese cities. In Hong Kong, you can experience one-country-two-systems. I would suggest a minimum stay of three nights here.

Being Asia’s World City nowadays, Hong Kong is an important leg on the China travel golden route.

There are several ‘bests’ of Hong Kong. The world’s best night view, best skyline, best shopping paradise, best gourmet’s paradise and so on. You would be able to buy the trendiest everything here at the lowest prices in the world, including authentic luxury goods.

Cantonese cuisine is one of the yummiest among Chinese foods. Don’t forget to go for a dim sum lunch and a typical Cantonese seafood dinner.

Visit this site for more travel information of the China travel golden route.

Chinese Horoscopes and the Coming Chinese New Year

Chinese Horoscopes and the Coming Chinese New Year
For the Chinese, this 2007 is the Year of the Pig, which effectively starts on the Sunday of February 18. This is the time when millions of overseas Chinese will go back home to their families to spend the holiday and have a wonderful dinner together. This is a time when every Chinatown all over the globe will be filled with much merrymaking, dramatic fireworks, dancing dragons, singing gongs, and happy smiles.

No doubt, the Lunar New Year is the most important holiday in history for Chinese, with the celebration taking as long as 15 days. Even people who don't have Chinese blood in them have come to celebrate and respect this holiday. Every year, Chinese spend lavishly on these performance arts in the hopes of bringing good luck and prosperity.

And just as the New Year is a time when they spend thousands on food and fireworks, it is also a high time consulting their fate in Chinese horoscopes and astrology. Chinese people, after all, are among the most superstitious people in the world. Superstitions, in fact, abound during the Chinese New Year itself, both before and during the holiday. On the days before the celebration, Chinese families spend their time cleaning their houses to sweep away the bad luck for the coming new year. On the holiday eve, buying a pair of shoes is considered bad luck, since according to them the word "shoes" is a homophone for the word "rough" in Cantonese. Eating candy, on the other hand, brings good luck in a way that their coming year will become sweet.

Now more than ever, people are interested in what Chinese horoscope has to say about their lives for the New Year. And the interest in Chinese astrology isn't limited to just Chinese businesspeople alone. Even foreigners, (i.e. Westerners) are just as willing to delve into Chinese horoscopes, perhaps even more so. Over time, Chinese people have passed on their beliefs to the next generation, continuously sharing them until they have woven a very detailed and comprehensive nexus of beliefs and wisdom. From the Chinese come Feng Shui, and Chinese astrology, and i-ching, and other sources of time-tested knowledge that will always define the Chinese culture. Which is why deep inside everyone, Chinese-blooded or not, there is a vast and unlimited belief in Chinese superstitions and other ancient wisdom, whose only aim is the betterment of people's lives.

Hopefully, this Year of the Pig proves to be indeed prosperous and deserving of congratulations for everyone. Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Chinese Valentines Day - Get Details about Chinese New Year and Chinese Valentines Day

Chinese Valentines Day - Get Details about Chinese New Year and Chinese Valentines Day
Like in the rest of the world a day is dedicated to love and romance even in China. The Chinese do not celebrate the day on the 14th February rather the Chinese Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 7th day of the 7th month according to the Lunar Calendar that has been chosen for the occasion. Qi Qiao Jie is the local name for the occasion and is also popular as the Seven sister's festival and the festival of the double sevens. There are several legends and fables that the Chinese associate with this festival. The best two variations have been mentioned below for you:

It so happened that during one of the visits to Earth by the seven daughters of the Goddess of Heaven, a young cowherd saw them taking bath by a riverside. Astounded by the beauty of the fairies, and on being encouraged by his pet ox, he silently stole their clothes and hid behind a tree. The elder sisters persuaded the youngest one to go and get the clothes back from the cowherd, Niulang. The youngest sister Zhinu who was also the most beautiful among them all went to Niulang to get back the clothes and also accepted his proposal for marriage. When the goddess of heaven came to know of this she was furious and distanced the two forever. Therefore, both are believed to be sitting on either side of the Milky Way, waiting to meet each other throughout the year. However, it is also believed that once a year, the magpies form a bridge and the two can unite. This is the day of the Chinese Valentine's day. In China the two stars; star of Vega and star of Altair are believed to be the representations of Zhinu and Niulang respectively.

In the second variation of the Chinese Valentines day legends, the emperor of heaven united Niulang and Zhinu on realizing that they were lonely, only to separate them once more after finding them too engrossed in each other and neglecting all work. He therefore made it a rule for them that they could only meet once in a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month of the year. Therefore the Chinese celebrate Qi Qiao Jie as the yearly union of the two.

Chinese valentines day cards are one of the most popular gift items doing the rounds on the day. Images of Niulang and Zhinu are the most common elements of the cards. Several variations of flash cards, animated cards and also post cards are available with all online portals offering Chinese valentines day cards. Chinese valentine's day gifts include a wide range of selection. From fortune cookies to flowers, to cards and various other souvenirs, all form great gift options to be given on the Chinese valentine's Day.

Chinese valentine celebrations are a blend of both the traditional as well as the contemporary. A few of the noteworthy Chinese valentine celebrations have been mentioned below for you:

Exchanging of gifts and goodies between lovers Visiting the temple of Matchmaker Offering of prayers by the unmarried girls to the Weaving Maid Star Demonstrating domestic arts like melon carving etc. Decorating of the Ox's horns. Watching the movements of the twinkling stars, Vega and the constellation Aquila signifying Zhinu and Niulang respectively.

Kunal writes many chinese valentine’s day related articles. 123chinesenewyear.com provide ideas about chinese new year eve, chinese new year game, chinese new year animal, gifts, songs and weekly horoscope.

Chinese Legend of the New Year's Monster Nian

Chinese Legend of the New Year's Monster Nian
An ancient Chinese legend tells of a man-eating predatory beast called Nian, extremely fierce, with a long head and sharp horn. Nian dwelled deep in the sea the whole year long, but on every Chinese New Year's Eve it would climb onto the shore to devour livestock and harm humans in a near-by village. Therefore, every Chinese New Year's Eve, all the villagers would take their old and young deep into the mountains to hide from Nian.

One Chinese New Year's Eve a grey haired man appeared in the village. He asked permission to stay for the night and assured everyone that he would chase away the beast. No one believed him. In addition, the old man steadfastly refused to go to the mountains to hide. Seeing that he could not be persuaded, the villagers departed without him.

When the beast arrived at the village to wreck havoc as usual, it was met with a sudden burst of exploding firecrackers. Startled by the noise, the flashes of light, and red banners flying about, it hastily turned and fled!

The following day, as the people returned from the mountains, they found the village intact and safe. The old man had left, but they found the remains of the three precious items he had used to chase the beast Nian away. They all agreed that the old man must be a deity who had come to help free them of the beast.

From then on, every Chinese New Year's Eve, families would hang red banners, set off fire crackers, and light their lamps the whole night through, awaiting the Chinese New Year. The custom spread far and wide and became a grand traditional celebration of the "Passing of Nian" ("Nian" in Chinese means "year").

So celebrating the Chinese New Year should be called “passing of Nian” or “Guo Nian” in Chinese. However the term was gradually changed to “Spring Festival” after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took power in 1949. Gradually people have forgotten the legend behind these Chinese New Year traditions. It is merely one small example of how the CCP has robbed the Chinese people of their rich traditional culture.

New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) is working hard to reverse this loss. In its 2006 Chinese New Year Global Gala it actually put the ancient story of the Nian monster on stage. NTDTV's Chinese New Year shows are a unique opportunity to experience the magic of traditional Chinese culture. Marvelous music, ancient instruments, magnificent backdrops, splendid costumes, and first class performers--altogether make for outstanding entertainment reflecting China's 5,000 years of civilization and traditional culture--a culture rich in myths and legends worth cherishing and preserving.

Between January and March the 2007 NTDTV Chinese New Year Spectacular will be touring Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and major cities in Canada, Europe and Asia. http://shows.ntdtv.com

Teach Your Friends to Use Chopsticks

First: The sticks are attached, but sectioned up the middle. Simply pull each end away from the other. Don’t twist them apart or try a fancy way of snapping them; you wouldn’t want a few splinters to hinder your dining experience! Once separated, you can rub the sticks together to smooth any rough edges. Step 1) The Base Stick: Place one stick so that it is cradled between the base of your thumb and forefinger. Hold it in place with the tip of your middle finger, as though you were holding a pencil.

Step 2) The Pivot Stick: Position the next chopstick so that it is pinned against the side of your index finger by the end of your thumb. Make sure the ends of the two sticks line up.

Step 3) The Pick-Up: Holding the base chopstick firmly in place, place a small amount of pressure on the Pivot Stick using the tip of your thumb as its base and your index finger to entice movement. The chopsticks should move like a pair of tweezers with the end of the Pivot Stick moving toward the end of the Base Stick. Slowly try to pick up a big piece of Orange Flavored Chicken, and then go for a small bite of your Kung Pao Chicken. Once you’re a pro, try for a single grain of rice!

Organizational Culture Change Is Like Twisting The Cube

Organizational Culture Change Is Like Twisting The Cube
Your might think that your organization's culture is extraordinary but its ultimate measure of success comes from how well it continues to serve the expectations of all its stakeholders. It is the development of the human power of the organization that gives an impetus to its financial capital. High performance organizations have rarely been built by nurturing the bottom line. It is only by nurturing the organizational cultures and sub-cultures that they built their bottom line.

In order to sustain success, people need to be challenged constantly so as to strengthen their cultures and this can be achieved by assessing where they are today and what their destination is. Leadership roles should encompass champions of culture and in doing so the workplace stands to benefit. But an enterprise can’t just declare a road map of its work culture and expect its employees to embrace it, which actually negates the very meaning of the word ‘culture’. In order to build strong, adaptive cultures, the associates have to be motivated enough to be a key part of the whole process.

In order to amplify the potential for those interested in developing a positive culture, you can communicate it to them that they are an integral part of the desired changes and therefore, will be duly rewarded for their efforts. Change is often not welcome with open arms and this is quite often the case, especially when the management fails to inform the stakeholders of the imminent changes. Due to lack of information, the stakeholders often cling to status quo. The stakeholders have a right to the information and should have been told, "When we get to this better place, here’s what’s in it for you.

The stakeholders should share our vision; after all, they form an important constituent of the company. So it can be quite an experience to be quite excited about the ‘vision’, share it with everyone at the seminar but only to be greeted with stony faces. The problem may lie in communication – they may not see things the same way that you do. So when you talk about new ideas, new ways to make the company more productive, the associates may end up hearing something altogether different: "Management has found a new way to make us do something we don’t want to do". This breach in understanding has occurred, as you did not involve their input as stakeholders in developing the proposed changes.

In many organizations, as things head downhill, suggestions about trying a new model or a new approach often flow thick and fast. This kind of ‘flavor of the month’ approach is both ridiculous and fatiguing. It takes more than just twisting on the cube to solve the puzzle of culture. This simple approach tries to solve the puzzle of culture by twisting on the cube and hoping that all the pieces would come together, giving way to dramatic results. The reality is that a puzzle cannot be solved in this fashion and culture does not, either. Organizational culture change is a complex process that visionary leaders understand and smartly introduce into the system in a 'natural' manner. The pieces of the cube themselves need to move over to their correct spots to solve the organizational puzzle. The leaders need to create an environment where this can happen.

G8 - Gas Emissions By Another Name

G8 - Gas Emissions By Another Name
This week starting on Monday 7th. July until Wednesday the 9th. the annual junket of the G8 countries meet in Japan to discuss among other items "global warming" mainly caused by increasing carbon gas emissions from industry, power stations and transport. These discussions on climate change have been ongoing annually since the Kyoto talks in 1977 and we, the general public, should be asking ourselves what results have been forthcoming over the years since they began; especially so since for this years meeting the security costs alone will be £141.8 million sterling (€113 million) (source Reuters 03/07/08) compared to last years £89.5 million when the junket was held in Germany. How sensible do we think it is to spend in only 2 years the sum of £231.3 million on security alone, plus of course you have to add the expenses for flying delegates from approx. 180 countries to Japan, plus also all the accommodation costs etc. etc. The total cost to us taxpayers for the 2 years must be in excess of £500 million, and for what result?
The research group ECOFYS stated in a study done for the environmental group WWF and Allianz that the USA, Canada and Russia had "failed the test" in climate performance to reduce emissions. The USA had failed the tests in 11 out of 12 categories and the 3 countries had all received "red ratings" and were at the bottom of the table which showed that ALL the G8 countries had failed to match their words with deeds. Italy and Japan also received "red ratings" with the comment that "there are few national measures in place to cut emissions". The 3 countries of the G8 at the top of the scorecard were Britain, France and Germany but were only awarded "yellow ratings" which meant overall that none of the G8 countries were awarded the "green" rating, it's only fair to state that Britain and France did receive praise for getting their emissions below the Kyoto target figures.
So after 11 years of emitting verbal gas at these G8 meetings where are we, what achievements have there been? What will be achieved this year? It's reckoned not much as the good old US of A has never signed the original Kyoto agreement, the oilman/cowboy President in charge at present is most unlikely to alter his stance and offend his friends in this his last year of presidency which means we have to wait for next years meeting to find out if the U.S., now questionably the second largest polluter in the world behind China (who incidently are not in the G8), has a change of policy.
We, the general public, can show these mindless, unthinking, environmentally unfriendly so called politicians (interesting isn't it that according to Dictionary.com a politician is described as "a seeker or holder of public office, who is more concerned about winning favour or retaining power than about maintaining principles" says it all doesn't it, couldn't have put it better myself.) How do we show them? Simple, very, very simple. Fit a Water4gas fuel conversion system to your car/vehicle. It cuts down to a minimum exhaust carbon gas emissions, it helps to maintain a cleaner environment, is a healthy solution to prolonged engine life, can vastly increase your m.p.g. while reducing the cost per litre/gallon by at least 30-60%, simple innit - cut carbon gas emissions, save the environment and save money at the same time.
We're not politicians but we can see the sense in that - why can't they?

Bulk Candy Wholesale

Bulk Candy Wholesale
Being in the candy business, The Candyland Store often comes across people who are interested in using candy as a theme or decoration for a special occasion. Be it a wedding, birthday party, sweet sixteen, baby shower, bar/bat mitzvah or any kind of event adding candy adds an extra bit of goodness. Are you interested in sweetening up your next gathering? Here are six great reasons to include candy on the guest list.

Choice of Colour - No matter what your color scheme, you can find candy to match. Need red? Try Red Hots , Hot Tamales or Very Cherry Jelly Bellys. Are Pink and brown your colors? Try chocolate-raspberry saltwater taffy. Need some light blue? Cotton candy flavored rock candy or some Berry Blue Jelly Bellys may help. Yellow the "in" color this year? Try banana runts. Need pink or blue for a baby shower? Cotton candy candy sticks should do the trick. The possibilities are virtually endless.

Choice of Theme - Most people would be amazed at the variety of shapes and "themes" available in candy today. Traditional party shaped candies might include flower lollipops and It's a Boy/Girl bubblegum cigars. Having a party with a beach theme? Why not throw some gummy sharks in a bag and have them chase around some Swedish Fish. Or grab some tropical fish lollipops. What about that Fear Factor part you were thinking about. No problem. Candy manufacturers love making gross looking, sounding and tasting candy. Consider Big Burp, a candy with a dispenser that burps, or Hose Nose, where you squeeze green goo out of fake nose onto your tongue (their motto is, "It' snot what you think"). Need some sour power? Try Toxic waste or Zotz. For those who want a real "creepy" experience, sink your teeth into some insect candy. You can't go wrong with sour cream and onion crickets or scorpion brittle.

Having a character party? No problem. Most popular kids movies and TV characters now have their very own candy counterparts. From Hello Kitty marshmallow pops, to Spongebob ring pops, to Disney Princess pez and Spiderman Giant Pez, almost everyone is available in candy. What if you want the star of the party to be the sweetest person there? No problem, you can have their picture put on chocolate!

Appeal for Universal-I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy some kind of candy. Sweets are one of those rare items that cut across gender, race, generation, culture, or any of the dozens of other "gaps" that separate people. I have had the pleasure of watching a parent or grandparent introduces a piece of nostalgic candy, such as Necco Wafers or wax bottles, to a child many times. I have witnessed peoples' faces light up as they discovered that their favorite candy is available in sugar free. I've been delighted to acquaint visitors from other countries with some of our unique specialties. We have a candy cart that we bring to many special events Rarely is it just the children who come to get something to eat! Everybody has a favorite candy!
Economic point of view - Often you can purchase candy to use as decorations for the same or less money than you would spend on traditional decorations. Bulk candy items scattered around a table make for a tasty design, without a lot of expense. You'll also save a lot of time on clean up. People don't leave a lot of decorations laying around when they're this good.

The final reason to think about making candy a part of your next party is the simplest and the most powerful. Candy is fun! Let's face it, which is more fun, a streamer or a strawberry gummy? A banner or a bunch of chocolates? Candy has a way of putting a smile on peoples' faces, and isn't that what it's all about?

Dating Customs Around the World

Dating Customs Around the World
In the early ages, there was no dating or courtship. Men actually captured their wives! They would raid villages and take the women they wanted for their own. A lot of our dating traditions were born in the medieval times from the concept of chivalry. This is where we got out notion that the male should pay for dinner and that a male should hold the door open for a lady. Women were actually given the right to propose marriage in 1228!

Between 1830 and 1900, romantic love was considered important to relationships. The rules for dating were strict and steadfast. Men and women had cards with their names imprinted on them which were left for each other in an elaborate courtship ritual. It was commonplace for chaperones to accompany couples on dates.

Today things have changed, but still there are special customs depending on where you live.

In Australia, girls often ask boys out on dates and pay for everything.

In European countries, teenagers often go out on group dates.

Dating is actually forbidden in Iran. Boys and girls are kept separate until they are ready to be married and then their parents do the introductions.

Dating is also very rare in Afghanistan, as most marriages are arranged.

Japanese and Korean individuals usually do not begin dating until they are in college.

In Brazil, group dates are not common at all. People tend to date much longer before they get married.

In China, dating usually does not begin until an individual is in their twenties. Chinese singles usually only date one or two people before they get married. There are also still instances of arranged marriages.

In most Asian countries it is customary for young people to remain at home until they are married and often a newlywed couple will live with one set of parents for awhile after they are married.

In Kiev, women do not like to shake hands. They think that it is not feminine. A woman will hold onto a man’s arm when they are out on a date instead of holding his hand.

Relationships and marriage are important in all cultures, but the actual act of dating varies greatly depending on where you live.

Necessity to Lose Weight

Necessity to Lose Weight
Necessity to Loss Weight

It is undoubtedly proven that increasing number of people have to cope with weight problems and becoming obese because of the hectic life-style that is a feature of modern day living. Having fast foods, which are rich in the fat content they have and moderate physical activity, it is quite expected that day-by-day people are becoming more and weightier.

The extent of the impact that obesity have is alarming. Currently in excess of 1 billion adults are obese - and a minimum of 300 million among them are critically obese. Obesity levels currently vary from below 5% in China, some of the African nations and Japan, to above 75% in urban Samoa. However, even in comparatively less affected countries such as China, rates are nearly 20% in some of the cities.

Obesity and overweight result in severe metabolic effects on cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin resistance and triglycerides. Some indecision of the results of overweight arises as researchers have employed varying BMI cut-offs, and as the prevalence of lots of medical conditions associated with the development of overweight may confuse the impacts of overweight itself.

Already childhood obesity has risen to epidemic standards in certain areas and in others it is rising all the time. Approximately 22 million children below five are predicted to be obese worldwide. In the opinion of the US Surgeon General, USA has double the number of obese children now and the number of plump adolescents has trebled since 1980. Since the 1960s the number of overweight children between 6-to-11 years has more than doubled. In the USA, between 1966-70 and 1988-91 obesity occurrence in youths between 12-17 years has risen dramatically from 5% to 13% in boys and from 5% to 9% in girls.

Obesity is global and extends more and more into the developing world; for instance, the occurrence of obesity in children between 5-to-12 years increased from 12.2% to 15.6% in only two years. Obesity is responsible for 2-6% costs of total health care in a number of developed countries; some approximates have the figure as terrible as 7%. The actual costs are indisputably much higher because not every one of the obesity-associated conditions is accounted for in the calculations.

Printed Mugs Create Different Kinds of Associations

Printed Mugs Create Different Kinds of Associations
It is printing that gives the final character to your chosen mug. Printed mugs can tell us many things; the company logo, the company message, and the print method you choose can help the receiver of the mug to gain a further insight into your company. A good logo is designed to create associations that are pleasing. And the layout and colours used for the design can add to the effect.

To see this in action, visualize a china mug, intensely black. The black colour itself creates a strong impact. Now visualize an image that stands for a currently popular theme - say, renewable energy represented by a brilliant yellow sun powering up a home. Provided the meaning is clear, it can create an association with responsible use of resources.

Now add a short message for your company below the image, of how your company takes it responsibilities seriously. If everything has been done tastefully, your company's brand is promoted favourably.

All these become possible with printing. There are different printing techniques that can produce different results in terms of sharpness, richness and variety of colour, etc. The material used for the mug can also dictate the particular printing technique used.

Screen Printed Mugs

Screen-printing can be done directly to the mug, without the need to create a water slide transfer first for subsequent transfer to the mug. Screen-printing is economic, and suitable where the design and the colour schemes are simple, with few colours and sparing use of half-tones (if any).

This method is used for earthenware mugs, and in cases where thousands of mugs have to be printed every day. The comparatively lower costs and higher productivity makes it ideal for budget promotional mugs.

Transfer Printed Mugs

Transfer printing involves first creating a water slide transfer image on special paper, and coating it. This print is then transferred to the mug by hand. Transfer printing is labour-intensive and more expensive. It is used for creating detailed images with tight registration and for more complex colour schemes. For bone china mugs, transfer printing works best.

Digital Printed Mugs

This is a modern version of transfer printing. The transfer images are created using modern digital printing techniques and then transferred to the mugs. The design can be created in digital format in a computer (without the need for screens) and then a few or hundreds of transfer images can be printed, for later transfer to mugs.

Dye Sublimation Printed Mugs

Dye sublimation allows creating images in brilliant colours. The solid organic dyes - cyan, magenta and yellow - are converted into gas particles and transferred to the media, and then over coated with a protective layer. The layer, however, might not protect the brilliant finish against too much bright light and heat, and frequent washing.

Dye sublimation printing is done using computers, and can give results resembling traditional kiln-fired enamel colours (though not as durable).

Heat Change Mugs

This variety of printed mugs creates a dramatic effect, as the images appear when the mug is filled with hot liquid. The designs are cured on earthenware mugs, and are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Diamond Simulant Jewelry: A Comparison Of Company Guarantees

Diamond Simulant Jewelry: A Comparison Of Company Guarantees
In the last several years, consumers have been turning away from natural diamonds and buying man-made diamond jewelry. There are several companies leading the diamond simulant industry: ASHA, CARAT, Russian Brilliants, and Diamond Nexus Labs. Each company has different policies for returns, exchanges, and guarantees.

How Much Time Do I Have?

You scroll through the various sites and decide on a piece of lab-created diamond jewelry, order, and wait for it to arrive. Now that it’s here, decide quickly if you need to take any further action if you ordered from Russian Brilliants, because they have a seven day refund policy (minus shipping costs). You have more than a week if you ordered from ASHA, with their policy being 14 days from the day you receive your shipment. If you choose to go with CARAT you have 30 days to return the package but you must notify them within 7 days that you intend to return the shipment, however you will have to return your purchase to China, as that is where they are based. With Diamond Nexus Labs, you have a full 30 days to inspect and enjoy your lab-created diamond jewelry. Additionally, only with Diamond Nexus Labs is it acceptable to actually wear your jewelry; both CARAT and ASHA state in their policy that the items must be returned unworn.

Returns

If you want the merchandise to be simply returned, each company will do their best to accommodate you. ASHA will charge a 10 percent restocking fee, as will CARAT. Keep in mind that with CARAT you will need to deal with customs for a return because they are based in China. This also means any phone inquiries must be handled during their business hours (the middle of the night in the United States). Russian Brilliants are vague about their return policy, while Diamond Nexus Labs extensive return policy details a no-hassle, no-questions-asked policy. Simply place a note with your request and your contact information in the package.

Exchanges

Your diamond simulant selection may be beautiful, but not what you expected from a picture. If you should wish to purchase something else, each company has a different procedure, and will provide phone support if you should have any questions (with the exception of ASHA – they have no phone customer service department; questions must be submitted via email). ASHA allows 14 days to submit an exchange, and somewhat cheekily specifies that after 14 days the company would be serving as your ‘personal jewelry library’ if they still permitted exchanges. CARAT allows you to decide on an exchange within 7 days, minus a 10 percent restocking fee. Russian Brilliants will also exchange within 7 days. Diamond Nexus Labs has no qualms about processing your exchange free of charge, no hassle or re-stocking fee, for a full 30 days.

Ring Resizing

When ordering a synthetic diamond ring, each company has a different policy regarding resizing the ring. This comes up quite frequently with weight loss or gain or simply an error in size selection. Russian Brilliants will resize your ring for a small fee. Carat does not indicate what their resizing policy is, and Diamond Nexus Labs will resize your ring, free of charge, within 30 days of your purchase. ASHA encourages you to take your ring to a local jeweler; however, if you find that you cannot find someone else to do it, they charge $35 to size white gold and $55 for platinum.
Lifetime Guarantees

Russian Brilliants and CARAT each warranty their lab-created diamond products against color changes for a lifetime. ASHA has recently withdrawn their offer of a lifetime warranty. They claim that the stones that were returned to them were due to customer or jeweler negligence. Diamond Nexus guarantees that if any Diamond Nexus Labs gemstone ever fades, discolors, or becomes damaged, a free replacement will be granted. They additionally ensure a free replacement if the stone is ever lost from its setting!

Clearly not all companies offering lab-created diamonds are equal, and customer service policies run the gamut from excellent to sub-standard. Now that you are prepared to shop around for diamond simulant jewelry with the guarantee information at your fingertips, you can enjoy browsing and selecting all the gorgeous synthetic diamond jewelry you desire.

Therapeutic Manipulation – What Exactly Does it Mean?

Therapeutic Manipulation – What Exactly Does it Mean?
Therapeutic manipulation refers to any technique by which a disease or disorder is treated using the remedial use of the hands, especially by a skilled practitioner. Some of these techniques include:

Acupuncture Massage Physiotherapy Chiropractics Myopractics

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture began to become better known in the United States in 1971, when New York Times reporter James Reston wrote about how doctors in China used needles to ease his pain after surgery. The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques. American practices of acupuncture incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. The acupuncture technique that has been most studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

Massage Massage is now one of the most popular forms of alternative therapy, whether it's for stress relief, muscular therapy or even emotional healing. But with so many different types of massage available, it can be hard to know what's right for you? The most basic form of massage is Swedish. The gentle soothing stimulation of the soft tissue and muscles is a wonderful means of calming nerves and improving overall circulation.

Physiotherapy Physiotherapy is a science-based healthcare profession which views movement as central to health and well being. Core skills used by physiotherapists include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the application of electrophysical modalities. Physiotherapists believe it is of crucial importance to take note of psychological, cultural and social factors which influence their clients. They try and bring the patients into an active role to help make the best of independence and function.

Chiropractics Chiropractics is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These important functions are controlled by the brain, spinal cord, and all the nerves of the body. The skull protects the delicate tissues of the brain. The moving bones of the spine protect the vulnerable communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots. If the nervous system is impaired, it can cause malfunction of the tissue and organs throughout the body. Chiropractic is the science of locating offending spinal structures, the art of reducing their impact to the nervous system, and a philosophy of natural health care based on your inborn potential to be healthy.

Myopractics As an advanced form of bodywork, Myopractic integrates together the soft tissues and skeleton to achieve deep relaxation and relieve chronic pain. Based on the same system of training as that in the Bowen Technique, Myopractic employs postural assessment as a guide to its treatment plan for clients aiming to restore the body's structural integrity back towards its ideal state. Myopractic shows that where there is a bone or joint misalignment, then there is a muscle that is responsible. Once the muscle disorder is corrected, the skeleton will respond correcting the misalignment.

Effective pain management is an increasingly diverse field and manipulative therapies are only one field to consider. Pain management is a matter of personal choice and a case of finding what works well for your individual needs. Effective management of pain can often make the difference between living a life governed by debilitating pain and leading a relatively normal life.

Las Vegas Must-See Attractions - An Unofficial Guide

Las Vegas Must-See Attractions - An Unofficial Guide
As a frequent visitor to Las Vegas, I am amazed when friends and acquaintances return from a first trip to this interesting city having missed seeing much of the "good stuff". My goal in writing this article is to provide you with my views on what Las Vegas Strip highlights to see first. If you are in town only one day and take in at least these attractions (most are free), you will have made a decent sight-seeing trip to tell your friends and family about.

This article is limited to must-see attractions on the Las Vegas Strip and downtown areas at this time. Just because a particular attraction is not mentioned (it may be added in the future) doesn't mean it may not be worth seeing. You can use this article as a guide and add other attractions you want to see as your time permits.

WHAT TO SEE IN LAS VEGAS

What I recommend as a first-day strategy for you is to: Spend most of the day visiting "must see" sites (mentioned below) on Las Vegas Boulevard (also known as the "Strip"); go downtown in the evening to see the sites plus take in the sound-and-light show on Fremont Street; top off your day by driving down the Strip to see the lights at night.

The Las Vegas Strip is about four miles long from the Stratosphere on the north end to Mandalay Bay on the south. Driving and parking can be a hassle. So your best bet is to limit these to a few locations and do most of your site-seeing on foot (wear comfortable shoes!). With some free trams along the way plus above-street walkways (with escalators or elevators), this is not as bad as it sounds. To make it easier for you, I have divided the Las Vegas Strip into an upper section and a lower section.

UPPER LAS VEGAS STRIP ATTRACTIONS

If you are not staying on or near the upper strip and have a car, there is a nice open-air parking lot between the Tropicana and Hooters Casino Hotel (the old San Remo). Otherwise, MGM Grand has a nice indoor ramp. You can start your tour wherever you want but for the first of your must-see attractions I recommend you start at Luxor. You can walk or take the free tram which runs between the Excalibur and Mandalay Bay. (One tram stops at the Luxor, and one doesn't). Watch for the tram signs. If you are traveling by taxi, get dropped off at the Luxor front door. My suggested tour of the Upper Strip takes you down the west side of the street to the Bellagio. You will then cross the street and go back up the other side until you reach MGM or the Tropicana.

LUXOR
This 30-story pyramid is one of the best themed hotel/casinos (Egyptian of course) and one of my favorite. The Luxor's atrium (or lobby if you prefer) is advertised as the world's largest and is wonderful - be sure you have your camera at the ready. For a fee, you can also see a replica of King Tut's Tomb and Museum. The Luxor's outside grounds features a 10 story sphinx.

EXCALIBUR
The Excalibur is well known for its castle-like appearance and medieval theme. If you are bringing the family on your trip, consider the Excalibur family-friendly. The rooms are nothing fancy but they are reasonably priced, and the second level Food Court is easy on your wallet. NOTE: Although the Excalibur is modest compared to many other hotel/casinos on the Strip, one of the largest machine payoffs happened here in 2003 - a cool $39.7 million on a Megabucks slot machine ($3.00 a pull).
NEW YORK-NEW YORK
The outside of New York-New York is spectacular. You can even ride on the Manhatten Express Roller Coaster if you dare. I consider the outside a must-see and the inside a nice-to-see (unless you are really into the New York City theme. Then both are a must-see). If you are doing okay on time, I suggest you take a short walk through New York-New York to see what they did to achieve a New York theme.

BELLAGIO
The "crown jewel" of the strip. With its Italian theme, eight-acre lake and water show, this is my #1 pick of places to see in Las Vegas. When you enter this hotel casino, check out the unique ceiling decoration in the lobby. Walk straight in from the lobby and you will see The Conservatory, a seasonal flower garden. Take the time to see this. It is an absolute treat even if you aren't into flowers and greenery. The Fountains at Bellagio water show takes place in the lake out front and is truely a "gift" to the Las Vegas visitor. You don't want to miss it so check for times. You may want to take in a few.

PARIS LAS VEGAS
I rate this a must-see because of its enjoyable replicas of Paris landmarks, most notably the 540 foot tall Eiffel Tower (with wonderful views from its observation deck). You can see three of the Eiffel Tower's legs from inside the casino which adds a nice "touch". Don't miss the Streets of Paris walkway (toward the back) with its shops and restaurants. The walkway eventually leads into Bally's, but you don't have to go that far.

MGM GRAND
The MGM Grand, with its emerald green glass and 45-foot bronze lion, is HUGE. It takes a while to walk from the front entrance to the registration area in the back. Fortunately, the only must-see attraction I recommend for your first-day tour is in the front - the Lion Habitat. This popular attraction allows you to see one or more lions "up close and personal" with its glass walls and see-through tunnel. Don't miss it. Also, the Rainforest Cafe (also near the front) has a gift shop that you might enjoy browsing in.

By now you have seen some great must-see attractions and maybe got some great photos too. It's time to travel down The Strip and see more wonderful must-see attractions.

LOWER LAS VEGAS STRIP ATTRACTIONS

Your next recommended must-see attractions are in the mid to lower end of The Strip. If you are not staying in one of these hotel/casinos and have a car, you can park in a nice, free ramp behind Treasure Island (also known as TI). Most of the attractions mentioned below are within walking distance. If you are staying at a hotel/casino in this area, start your morning tour in this area first and move to the upper strip attractions after you have finished. I am assuming you are not staying in this area and are either parking in TI's ramp or having the taxi drop you off at the Mirage front door.

MIRAGE
The Mirage is a must-see stop. As you enter this Polynesian-themed hotel/casino through the front door, go to the right and see what's in back of the registration desk. It is worth seeing and one many people seem to miss on their trip. The Mirage is host to two "habitats" - the White Tiger Habitat and the Dolphin Habitat. See the Dolphin Habitat if you are doing okay on time. You MUST see the White Tiger Habitat. There are usually one or more of these magnificent animals on display and you can get a good view. The Mirage also features an outdoor, night-time attraction - a 54 foot volcano that erupts every 15 minutes from dusk till midnight.
CAESARS PALACE
The glory that was Rome is on display in this casino/hotel which has been around since 1966. Caesars takes up a large amount of real estate on The Strip - it is HUGE. You will not have time to see all there is to see on this first-day trip. My recommendation to have you enter Caesars from the Mirage side (as opposed to the Bellagio side) takes you to my must-see attraction for you - The Forum Shops. You can stroll through this ancient Roman marketplace setting and enjoy the sights of nearly 100 interesting shops. There are also two shows in this area - the "Rise and Fall of Atlantis" and a moving Roman "statues" at Festival Fountain. If you can catch one of these shows without waiting, take it in. Otherwise take it in another time.

VENETIAN
The beautiful Venetian is home to a number of attractions - the Grand Canal with its gondolas, Madame Tussauds, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum, The Grand Canal Shoppes. I hope you are staying more than one day as you will want to come back and tour the quarter-mile Grand Canal (inside) with its shops, street performers and Venetian Living Statues. For your first pass I recommend you take in the outside Grand Canal from the arched bridge and the lobby with its beautiful ceiling paintings.

WYNN
Your last must-see stop on The Strip is the newest (opened in spring of 2005), most expensive (built at a cost of $2.7billion) hotel/casino in Las Vegas to date. Built on the site of the old Desert Inn (1950-2000) no expense was spared in the construction of the 50 story Wynn and it shows. From the Esplanade with its high-end shops (Dior, Cartier, Chanel, etc.) to the lobby to the on-site Ferrari/Maserati dealership. It can be a little over-whelming. Highlights for me are the bright colors, flowers and plants, waterfalls and the Parasol Down Lounge.

Next stop - downtown Las Vegas. From Wynn to downtown Las Vegas is approximately four miles. You can either take The Deuce, Las Vegas Trolley, a taxi (under $20) or drive. If you have a car there is a nice, handy parking ramp across the street from the Golden Nugget (on South 1st Street).

DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS ATTRACTIONS

You may hear some people say "don't bother going downtown Las Vegas - there is nothing down there to see". That is NOT true. There are some must-see attractions and more nice-to-see ones. My favorite places downtown are the Golden Nugget and the Las Vegas Club but I've been to most all of them. You will notice the downtown casinos have a different personality from those on The Strip.

GOLDEN NUGGET
This well known downtown hotel/casino has a must-see attraction that a surprising number of people know nothing about. The largest gold nugget known to remain in existance, 875 troy ounces, is on display just off from the lobby. The Hand of Faith nugget was found in 1980 in Australia and sold to the Golden Nugget in 1982. The Golden Nugget recently completed a major renovation ($30-million) to their pool area they call The Tank. The renovation includes a 200,000-gallon shark tank set up so that you can be swimming inches away from the sharks or take the plunge thru the shark tank via the three-story waterslide. A definite must-see when visiting downtown.
FREMONT STREET EXPERIENCE
The sound-and-light show on Fremont Street is one you won't want to miss. The Fremont Street Experience is a four-block, pedestrian-only section of downtown that opened in 1995. In addition to its famous sound-and-light shows there are other forms of live entertainment for you to enjoy. The sound-and-light shows, usually about four of them a night, start at dusk and go until midnight. They do not last too long but are pretty awesome. If you take in one, you'll want to see the others as they are all different. One of the best free attractions Las Vegas has to offer.

Well there you have it. My list of recommended must-see Las Vegas Strip Attractions for you to see on your first day (okay, a long day). No matter where in the world you come from, I hope you find this information useful. And be sure to visit Source1LasVegas again. I will be adding more articles about Las Vegas in the near future that you may find of interest.

Arranging a Trip? Need Some Help? Air Travel Tips Part Three

Arranging a Trip? Need Some Help? Air Travel Tips Part Three
This article presents several travel tips that will help you to get the most out of your next air voyage, whether domestic or international. Be sure to save and/or print out the entire series of articles.
Take care of your ears during take-off and landing. This is not the time to take a nap! Stay alert and chew gum, yawn, or use the Valsalva maneuver to clear your ears:
- Close your mouth, pinch your nostrils, and GENTLY try to exhale.
- This maneuver forces air into the Eustachian tubes.
Reading material onboard most planes is dull - usually a magazine or two published by the airline. Do not forget to pack something in your carryon that will keep you occupied during long flights or delays that could leave you stranded for long periods in airports.
Keep hydrated while you fly, and be sure to get out of your seat a couple of times per hour. This will help to prevent DVT (deep vein thrombosis, or clots) in your legs - a potentially fatal condition.
If the seatbelt light stays on for extended periods, take little in-seat exercise breaks:
-Lift each leg separately a couple of inches from the floor while you rotate the foot at the ankle - several times clockwise, follow by several times counter clockwise.
- Keeping both feet on the floor, rock the feet forward to simulate standing on your toes, then backwards to simulate standing on your heels. Do a few repetitions.
- Tense and relax muscles in calves several times. Follow up with thigh muscles.
Avoid using luggage that looks like everyone else's. Be innovative with colored tape or fabric paint to make your suitcases stand out. Carrying a photo of your luggage in a wallet or purse makes it easier for baggage handlers to locate your bags if they should go astray.
Food onboard aircraft is often unappetizing. Consider packing snacks and drinks that fall within current security guidelines - especially for long flights.
When cabin crew or flight attendants are talking, pay attention. It is easy to become involved in personal conversations and tune them out. Attentiveness could save you from unexpected surprises later in the flight.
Aircraft cabins have extremely dry air. Carrying a small tube of moisturizing cream will help to keep your skin soft while you fly. Make sure you carry lip balm as well.
Constant noise creates stress, even if you are not consciously aware of it. Noise-cancelling headphones used to listen to your favorite music, in-flight movies, or an audio book will aid in relaxation and reduce the undesirable side effects of noise pollution.

When planning your travels or buying your airline tickets, you have probably come across definitions and terms that might have seemed strange to you. Granted, many of the definitions and terms become more understandable as you become familiar with the industry as a frequent flier. While there are many terms for hotel room types, car types, and travel amenities, the area that we shall attempt to define would be tours.
Tour operators try to make their brochures and websites as attractive, informative and understandable as possible; however, in reading this information you will undoubtedly encounter some terminology that is new and unfamiliar. To assist you, here's a glossary covering some of the terminology you will most frequently find in brochures, fliers, and on websites.
Accommodations:
* Single Room: A room with one bed for one person. * Twin Room: A room with two beds for two people. * Double Room: A room for two persons with a double bed. * Triple Room: A room for three persons, usually consisting of twin beds (or double beds, plus a rollaway bed. * Ocean Front: A room directly facing the ocean. Usually it is on the first floor with a door that exists onto the beach. * Ocean View: A room from which it is possible to view the ocean, whether the room is on the first floor, the 12th floor, or on a hillside. * Service Charges/Taxes: Service charges are a fixed percentage automatically added to room and meal charges. The city, state or federal government sets taxes.

Air Transportation:

* Add-on Fare: The cost of air travel from a domestic city to another domestic city from which the tour/vacation package originates and vice versa. * Baggage Allowance: The weight or volume of baggage that may be carried by a passenger without additional charge. * Connecting Flight: A segment of an ongoing trip, which requires a change of aircraft, but necessarily a change of airline. * Direct Flight: A flight on which passengers do not have to change planes, but may involve one more stops enrooted. * Non-stop Flight: Service between two points with no scheduled stop enrooted.

Car Rental:

* Drop-off Charge: Fee charged by a car rental company to defray the cost of returning the vehicle to its original location. * Value Added Tax (VAT): Tax imposed by governmental authority.

Charter Travel: Thanks to improved Federal regulations and a new generation of operators, air charters have become the preferred way to reach many of the world's most popular vacation destinations for reasons of value and convenience. Here's how they work: The tour operator rents an airplane and sells the seats, often in combination with a hotel package and perhaps other ground components. The result is a substantial savings.
Conditions:

* Force Majeure: An event or effect that cannot be reasonably anticipated or controlled (such as storms or war).

Consular Information Sheets: Governments issue Consular Information Sheets for every country of the world. They include such information as location of the U.S. embassy or consulate in the subject country, unusual immigration practices, health conditions, minor political disturbances, unusual currency and entry regulations, crime and security information, and drug penalties. If an unstable condition exists in a country that is not severe enough to warrant a Travel Warning, a description of the condition(s) may be included under an optional section entitled Safety/Security.

Documents:

* Passport: An official government document certifying identity and citizenship and granting permission to travel abroad (overseas). * Visa: An official authorization appended to a passport permitting travel to and within a particular country.

Escorted Tours:

The most traditional tour product is also the most misunderstood. The options are so varied that it's easiest to identify the few elements they share: Group travel, usually by motor coach but sometimes by ship, or train; a set itinerary, with lodging, activities, and most meals included and a tour director to coordinate, guide, and manage the trip. Traveling on an escorted tour provides a measure of security and peace of mind. And today, more tour operators build in free time on group tours, giving travelers the best of both worlds.

Independent Travel:

There's no group on these trips, no guide and no fixed itinerary, unless the client wants one. The sole difference between this and fully independent travel is that by booking through a tour operator from its available inventory, your clients get the advantage of group buying power, without the group.

Package Travel:

Like group tours, packages tend to have fixed itineraries, with ground transportation and hotels booked in advance. But like independent travel, there's no organized group; clients are on their own, free to do as they please at each destination, but they still have the convenience and reliability that come with booking through a tour operator.

Public Announcements:

Public announcements (PAs) are a means to disseminate information about terrorist threats and other relatively short-term and/or trans-national conditions posing significant risks to the security of American travelers. The PAs are made when there is a specific threat that cannot be countered. In the past, Public Announcements have been issued to deal with short-term coups, violence by terrorists and anniversary dates of specific terrorist events.
Tours:
A group of people traveling together who follow a pre-planned itinerary. Most tours include accommodations, a number of meals, sightseeing, land transportation, and/or other transportation, plus the services of a professional tour manager or escort who accompanies the group.
Travel Warnings:
Travel warnings are issued when the State Department decides, based on all relevant information, to recommend that Americans avoid travel to a certain country. Countries where avoidance of travel is recommended will have Travel Warnings as well as Consular Information Sheets. You may also want to review specific country Background Notes.
Vacation Packages:
Vacation packages are designed for those traveling independently. They include a combination of two or more travel services (e.g. hotel accommodations, car rental, air transportation) that are offered at a package price. Many vacation packages offer a choice of components and options, thereby enabling you to customize the package to your tastes, interests and/or budget.
Vouchers:
Documents issued by tour operators to be exchanged for accommodations, sightseeing and other services.
